Optical prisms
Keyword:
Fresnel prism is a special behavior extender, which acts like a wide-band wave plate and can provide the required phase delay over a wide wavelength range, and the wavelength range is wider than that of a birefringent wave plate. It can be used as an alternative to the delayed wave plates used in broadband, multi-wavelength or tunable laser sources, and is often used in spectral instruments such as ellipsometers. The prism design produces a 45° phase difference per internal reflection, providing a λ/4 phase delay. Because the phase difference is caused by the slowly changing rhomboid prism dispersion, the delay change due to different wavelengths is much smaller than that of other types of retarders. The half-wave retarder is composed of two quarter-wave retarders
